Roasted chestnut stands in Vienna

Roasted chestnuts, lovingly called „Maroni“ in German are basically a part of Austrian tradition. As soon as autumn breaks in and it starts to get chilly, stands start to pop up all over the place.
A pack usually costs around 3€ and is a great way to battle the cold. Or switch up you junk food.

Here is a evolving list (updated as we visit more of them) of stands you should visit or avoid. The stands are rated by the percentage of bad chestnuts in a pack. The average is 20% or two out of 10 roasted chestnuts.

  • Kagran
There are 2 stands at the underground Station Kagran. One of them is great while the other isn’t.
The stand at the escalator exit
If you have a choice stay away from this one. In one pack sold there are about 50% bad chestnuts. Way above average. The salesman is friendly though.
The stand next to the flower shop
Is a gem. Even after several visits he only had good chestnuts! A rate of 0%! If you end up passing be sure to try some chestnuts there.
