Irodion – Greek restaurant in central Vienna

Hello again! Once more we went out to eat, but this time we were feeling like something different from the usual Asian cuisine. The decision was made to go to Irodion, a well known Greek restaurant.

Location
The restaurant is located on one of the shopping streets of Vienna, Landstraßer Hauptstraße and therefore very accessible via public transport. You can reach it best with the underground U3 at Rochusgasse. More detailed descriptions of the location can be found on their website.

Starters
Both of us had starters. We had the Pitta, filled with feta cheese and spinach and grilled octopus.

The Pitta was surprisingly not a single one filled with spiach and feta but two with each of them being filled with feta or spinach respectively. The Pitta tasted quite good, the dough was well made crunchy outside and soft inside, but was more filling than expected. Especially for a starter.

The grilled octopus was delicious. It was soft and not at all chewy wich happened to me way to often in the past. The outside was nicely grilled and had a few crunchy bits. I (A.) also really liked the dressing that came on top of it. It was nicely seasoned and great with the salad and octopus. The dish also come with bread and hummus.  The bread was nice and fresh. Eventhough the humus was really tasty, it was not needed.

Main
Here we both went with lamb dishes. Lamb skewers and Lamb shank with eggplant.

The Lamb skewers were really nice, the meat was cooked medium and seasoned lightly. The peppers on the skewers were a bit greasy but the lamb was so good, it was tender and everything, that it doesn’t matter.

There were a lot of sides that came with the skewers some rice, salad, roasted potatoes and Tzatziki. The rice was well done and seasoned with some paprika spices, the potatoes were not seasoned but still tasted good, the didn’t seem greasy at all. The side salad was a mix of cabbage and lettuce, the cabbage was great but unfortunately the lettuce wasn’t fresh, you could see brown dots on it. Finally the Tzatziki, as a person that generally isn’t fond of that dish there is no way to judge it fairly so comments are left out.

Sadly the lamb shank was not as good. It was nicely seasoned and tender but it was drenched in oil. The oil was overwhelming and I (A.) could barely eat it and left a lot on the plate. I was a little disapointed because the starter was that good.

After the plates were cleared a server or maybe even the manager came over and asked if anything was wrong with it wich we thought was quite nice.

Dessert
Onto what everybody was waiting for, the dessert. This time we didn’t share but bought one dessert each, which both of us ended up regretting.

We had a chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream and a panna cotta with raspberry sauce.

The chocolate soufflé had a center of liquid chocolate and was very delicious, as it wasn’t too sweet and very fluffy. When eating that cake, the vanilla ice cream was a necessity, as it provided a good balance to the chocolate and cleared the tongue of the heavy chocolate taste. All in all a great dessert! Please note though that it has about ~3000 calories.

The panna cotta was delicious as well. Most people probably know what panna cotta tastes like. It is a creamy custard like consistancy and very sweet. The rspberry sauce gave it a little bit of acidity with complemented it well. Even though we deeply regretted ordering two desserts we both left nothing on our plates.

Conclusion
A great restaurant that you’ll leave with a full stomach. Maybe a bit too full 😉

Please stay tuned for next weeks review of a more „lightweight“ restaurant.
