Yori – authentic Korean food in Vienna

Hello again, it’s been a while.

So today we tried Korean food for the first time in Vienna. We went to the restaurant, „Yori„, a well known Korean restaurant in Vienna.

The restaurant itself is really easy to find, and lies near the underground stations, „Schwedenplaz“ and „Stubentor“, which makes is very accessible via public transport.

The restaurant

The restaurants interior is very tastefully decorated, a combination of reds, black and wooden surfaces give it a very modern atmosphere. You can check out their website here, to get a first impression.

We went to eat at the restaurant at 6pm on the weekend and the restaurant was basically empty. As soon as it hit 7pm though people started to stream into the restaurant. Therefore we recommend reserving a table or going there earlier rather than later.

The food

The two of us shared some kimchi as a starter and also had some Gun Mandu. The spice of the kimchi was good. It didn´t overwhelm you. As you can see on the pictures below the Gun Mandu where a kind of pan fried dumpling. Both dishes were really nice especially the Gun Mandu combined with the sesame sauce. Here a picture of the dishes:

We followed up the starter with some Bibimbap, we got two kinds the vegetarian one and the beef one. As soon as we received our main dishes, we immediately regretted ordering  kimchi as a starter, because lo and behold, the Bibimbap came with kimchi.

Both Bibimbaps came with the same sides, a bowl with tofu, some seaweed, kimchi and a spicy sauce. The main difference between the two dishes was that the beef version came in a stone bowl and the veggie one in a plain metal bowl. This may not seem like a big issue but it meant that the veggie Bibimbap was served lukewarm, making it much less enjoyable to eat. Even though the dolsot bibimbap (beef version) was served in a seemingly hot stone pot, it was merely warm and not hot enough to build the signiture crispy rice at the bottom.

Disregarding the temperature of the dish, the sauce was nice and spicy and gave the rice and vegetables a kick. We followed the advice of the nice waitress and wrapped our food in seaweed, this was quite difficult with the thin leafs but very tasty. The seaweed gave the dish an extra „saltiness“ which was good. The only little problem was that it came with too little seaweed. We ran out of it pretty quickly and where left with quite a lot of the main dish.

Dessert

Of course we didn’t skip dessert. We ordered a „Yori special“ which contained nearly all of their desserts on one plate.

There was a brownie, green tea cheesecake, green tea ice cream, some fruit and a small sweet we had no clue about. All of the treats were nice, but the greatest of all was hands down the green tea cheese cake.

While the cheese cake had the typical cheese cake taste it also had a subtle green tea taste, that and the marble like look of the cake made it great to eat. If you have the chance go try it!

We were a little split on the macha ice cream. For one of us the taste was too strong, the other really liked it. The chocolate walnut brownie was good but nothing special. And as we mentioned, we had no idea what the cookie looking thing was. We liked it but could not tell you what was in it if our lives depended on it.

Drinks

As for drinks we had a simple lemon soda and Moringa Lemon Tee. Having never tried Moringa Lemon Tea before it was a pleasant surprise that it was, rather than a plain Lemon tea, more of a fruity tea with peach like citrus aroma. While it didn’t taste sweet the smell was very much so. It didn’t go very well with the kimchi flavour though, so if you decide to order it, do so when ordering dessert.

Price

In total we paid ~50€. So it was 25€ each for starter, main & dessert + drinks. Which is very reasonable for the experience.

The lunch menu is a tad cheaper, so if you’d like to save money we recommend going during lunch time.
